In 1985, following rosy but completely inaccurate forecasts for that year by all forecasters, the need for a purely quantitative forecast model was prompted by a group of silicon-valley engineers pursuing their MBA degrees at Santa Clara University. This group complained to (at the time) Professor Handelsman that there was a lack of accurate forecasting in the semiconductor industry. Professor Handelsman began developing a quantitative model during the 1985-1986 period and introduced it, for free, in August 1986. By January 1987, the number of recipients grew to one hundred. The rest is forecasting history.
